Tyler Gauthier is Heading for Southern New Hampshire University

Courtesy of the Lynn Journal

Tyler Gauthier forever cemented his place in Lynn baseball lore when he belted a dramatic, game-tying three-run homer in the final inning of the 2007 Babe Ruth Eastern Mass. state championship game that the Lynn 15-year-old team eventually won over Plymouth in extra innings.

Gauthier remembers his fence-clearing blast for the Lynn Babe Ruth All-Stars two years ago in South Boston, a magical moment in his baseball career on a day when the game time temperature was in the neighborhood of 100 degrees.

While Gauthier produced that gem with his bat, it’s his pitching that’s making news today. Now a hard-throwing 6-foot-4 1/2-inch, 220-pound right hander (he bats left), Gauthier, a senior at Lynn Classical High School, has earned a athletic/academic scholarship to Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in Manchester, N.H., where he will embark on his first college baseball season in 2011.

Gauthier, 17, has verbally committed to SNHU where he’ll join his brother, Bryant, a junior, on the team’s pitching staff. Gauthier, the second of three baseball playing sons (his younger brother, Kyle, also pitches for Classical) of Mark and Cheryl Gauthier, selected SNHU over several Division 1, 2, and 3 schools that had contacted him.

“I liked the coaches and I think the baseball program is going to do good things because they’re bringing in a lot of good players,” said Tyler, who was recruited as a pitcher.

Gauthier has an 88 mph fastball, a good curveball, a splitter, and a changeup in his repertoire and he should be the ace of coach Mike Zukowksi’s Rams staff in the spring. He is coming off a breakout summer in which he won four games for the Gautreau American Legion Raiders.

Zukowski, who played college baseball at Merrimack, says SNHU is a good fit for Gauthier. SNHU plays in the Northeast-10 Conference.

“Southern New Hampshire gave him a great financial package and I think it’s a great fit for him – Division 2, Northeast-10 Conference, excellent baseball,” said Zukowski. “ He’s hitting about high 80s consistently and he has the breaking ball. I think he be able to compete at this level. He’s a smart baseball player, too, so that’s going to help him. He’s about 6-5 and has a good presence on the mound.”

Zukowski said Gauthier should be the ace of a deep pitching staff at Classical that will include junior Greg Ryback, seniors Ryan Powers and Justin Hart, and sophomore Kyle Gauthier.

“Pitching should be our strength this year,” said Zukowski.

Gauthier, who played in the Wyoma Little League, credits his father for teaching him the basics of pitching. He also lauds Zukowski for helping him develop his skills.

“I like our coach a lot,” said Gauthier. “He really knows the game. I know he played college baseball and loves the game.”

Gauthier is excited about the 2010 Classical baseball season. “Our goal is to make the state tournament and I think we definitely can do it,” said Gauthier. “We have a lot of pitching this year and some good bats. I’m just going to keep working through the winter months to get ready for my final year of high school baseball. I’m excited about college baseball and playing on the team with my brother at SNHU. They say my brother has a chance to be an All-American pitcher this year.”

Mark Gauthier said he’s proud of his son.

“I’m very proud of Tyler and his accomplishments,” said Mr. Gauthier. “There were a lot of colleges looking at him, so for Southern New Hampshire to really go after him the way they did really speaks volumes. They have a terrific program up there and knowing the coaches, they’re really gearing the school for success in Division 2.”

Jasper Grassa

Jasper Grassa heading to Bentley

By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item ,  of LynnNovember 11, 2009

Classical High point guard Jasper Grassa is heading to Bentley University on a basketball scholarship.

Grassa, who averaged 17.4 points per game as a junior and led the Rams in scoring with 417 points, will be signing his letter of intent today, according to his father and coach Tom Grassa.

"It was a huge relief," the younger Grassa said about making his college decision. "Everything is more relaxed now. Before it was always in the back of my mind. Now I can just go through my senior year and have a good time."

Grassa said he was impressed by the strength of the basketball program and the school itself. Bentley is a Division 2 school that plays in the Northeast-10. The team has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, winning its conference five consecutive years and going to the Sweet 16 three consecutive years.

"They're really kind of the cream of the crop in the East for Division 2," Coach Grassa said. "The last five years, they've been the team to beat in the East."

Several local high school football players have landed at Bentley in recent years, including English's Justin Young and Chris Carroll and former Classical High player Cetan Tyler.

Although there was a time when colleges would get to see a potential recruit play his senior year, the older Grassa said that really isn't the case anymore. He said most schools make their scholarship decisions by late summer or early fall. Much of the scouting actually gets done at AAU basketball tournaments.

"AAU really helps," the younger Grassa said. "You get to play a lot of games in front of coaches. You get a lot of recognition."

Grassa said his father has also been a big help during the college selection process. The 6-0 guard said the location of the school (in Waltham ) is also good because it will allow his father and mother (Lisa) to see him play. His younger brother, Nick, is a junior on the Classical High basketball team. Both Grassas are also on the football team.

"There's some outstanding competition in Division 2," Coach Grassa said. "I think their (Bentley's) style of offense will be a good fit for Jasper."

Manning Field the Place To Be in November

By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item of Lynn

Winter may be knocking on the door, but Manning Field isn't ready to go into hibernation just yet.
The facility will be rocking for another month or so with an assortment of high school football games, Pop Warner football playoff games and high school soccer tournament games.
Although only two Lynn high school soccer teams qualified for the state tournament -- the Classical boys and Tech boys -- facilities manager John Kasian is expecting Manning Field to host several state tournament games up through the Eastern Mass. level and possibly beyond if it is picked as a site for a state final by the MIAA.
If either Classical or Tech gets a home game to start the tournament (pairings come out on Thursday), they could be at Manning as early as Friday or into the weekend. West Lynn Pop Warner playoffs begin Wednesday night and Thursday night at Manning Field. East Lynn is on the road during the week, but the surviving teams could be playing at Manning on Sunday.
Kasian said Manning will also be used for a football doubleheader (Super Bowl play-in games) on Tuesday, Dec. 1. If that's not enough, the track is still open during the day for walkers and runners. It will close after the final football game.

Northeastern Conference to Consider Expansion

By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item

The Northeastern Conference will hold its October meeting Thursday, and among the items on the agenda will be a vote on whether to invite five Greater Boston League teams and Masconomet to join the conference.

The five GBL teams are Cambridge, Everett, Somerville, Medford and Malden. Masconomet plays in the Cape Ann League.

According to NEC secretary/treasurer Dick Baker, the league alignment would vary depending on the sport. In cases where every school has a team, the conference would likely be split into three divisions. There could also be sports without as many teams that would be split in two divisions.

In football, Baker said the GBL teams and Masco would likely all be in one division with the rest of the conference in the other two divisions, as it is now. The football alignments statewide could all change the following fall (2011) if a proposal by the MIAA football committee and the football coaches association is supported. That proposal would create all-new football divisions with teams of equal strength.

Baker said there are also constitutional changes that could be voted on if there is a motion from the floor. All three pertain to league expansion. One would require a 90 percent vote of members to change sports alignments via divisions (it presently takes a two-thirds vote). Another involves veto power (any present member of the NEC would have the veto power to not play a new NEC member in any sport). The third involves voting power (any new members of the NEC would not be allowed to vote on sports alignments and divisions for the first five years of membership). All or none of these could come up for a vote.

The issue of expansion has been discussed at previous meetings. On the plus side, Baker said the feeling is that adding six teams would give all schools the opportunity to compete at an equal level and be successful. There were, however, some concerns, among them being an increase in travel time.

Dana Brown, the Malden High principal and president of the GBL, made a presentation to the NEC at its September meeting that detailed the sports and levels offered by each school in the GBL, their sportsmanship efforts, the facilities available and a population breakdown of each school.

Also at the September meeting, Masconomet athletic director Jared Scarpaci made a presentation that detailed the sports and levels of each at his school, its facilities and a profile that outlined where Masco would fit in with the NEC.

Thursday's meeting is at Calitri's restaurant on Route 1 in Danvers at 11:30 a.m.
